Embracing Diversity: Inspiring Inclusion for International Women's Day

As we approach International Women's Day on March 8th, 2024, the theme “Inspire Inclusion” resonates profoundly with the core values we strive to uphold in our pursuit of gender equality and empowerment. As the Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), and a proud member of the Advisory Group for Ghana Somubi Dwumadie, I find great significance in reflecting on this theme, particularly in the context of women with disabilities.

Inclusion is not merely a buzzword; it is a fundamental principle that underpins the fabric of our society. It embodies the spirit of diversity, equity, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their background, abilities, or circumstances. As we celebrate the achievements of women around the world, we must acknowledge the diverse experiences and challenges faced by women with disabilities.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, as set by UN Women, urges us to “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.” This call to action reinforces the notion that empowering women is not only a moral imperative but also an essential catalyst for societal advancement. However, true progress can only be achieved when inclusion is at the forefront of our endeavors.

Inclusive practices benefit everyone, not just those directly affected by disability. When we create environments that embrace diversity and accommodate the needs of all individuals, we foster a culture of belonging where every woman can thrive. This means breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes, and advocating for policies that promote equal opportunities for women with disabilities.

As a woman with a disability, I firmly believe that my gender comes before my disability. However, I also recognise the intersecting nature of my identity and the unique perspective it brings to the table. By embracing both aspects of my identity, I am empowered to advocate for the rights and inclusion of all women, regardless of their background or abilities.

This International Women’s Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to inspire inclusion in all aspects of life. Let us amplify the voices of women with disabilities and ensure that they are heard and valued. Let us challenge ourselves and others to dismantle barriers and create a world where every woman can realise her full potential.

In conclusion, I urge all women, in Ghana and beyond, to be courageous in the face of adversity and to challenge any system that does not inspire inclusion. Let us turn this movement into action and work together to build a more inclusive and equitable world for generations to come. Because when we inspire inclusion, we accelerate progress for all.
