International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024 is here and the call to action is ‘Inspire Inclusion’.
Let’s talk about Adwoa Amponsah-Dapaah, a woman with a disability who has realised her dreams of becoming a lawyer. She focuses on human rights, disability rights, and advocacy where her expertise has consistently contributed to successful outcomes for her clients.
What sets her apart, aside from her legal acumen, is her commitment to addressing complex challenges facing people with disabilities in Ghana.
Alongside many other skilled individuals, Adwoa has been an active and vocal member of the Ghana Somubi Dwuamdie’s Advisory Group since 2020.
What sets her apart, aside from her legal acumen, is her commitment to addressing complex challenges facing people with disabilities in Ghana. This includes access to education, employment, decent housing, and respect for their basic rights. She has collaborated with the Henry Djaba Foundation to address some of these important social issues.
On World Cerebral Palsy Day 2021, Adwoa featured in an interview with Ghana Somubi Dwumadie to mark the day and she called on all Ghanaians to be more accommodating of people with disabilities and show them lots of love.
In 2021, Adwoa (on the right) supported another advisory group member, Esenam (on the left) after she was bullied during an online discussion where she shared her story of being discriminated against at her place of employment due to her mental health condition.
Adwoa’s commitment to promoting justice and advancing the rule of law has been exemplified in her involvement in several discussions on radio and TV shows. She is seen in this photo (2nd right) contributing to discussions on GTV in 2021 where members of Ghana Somubi Dwumadie’s Advisory Group made the case for more investment in mental health.
Adwoa featured on a powerful short film produced by the programme to mark International Women’s Day (IWD) 2022. The film delved into the experiences of four Ghanaian women with disabilities, and what biases they want to be broken to minimise the hardships that women with disabilities have to contend with in this unequal world.
Adwoa participated in the University of Ghana Disability in Education Conference in November 2023 where she gave a presentation and moderated a panel discussion on the experiences of women with disabilities and mental health conditions.
